Chapter 8

Anahera and I walked down an ancient trail in the woods. The autumn leaves were a brilliant crimson, and the smell of the changing seasons was upon us.

“So, you can feel? I never thought it possible that a demon could do such a thing.” She opened her book and wrote down the words as I spoke.

“Yes I do- and part of me hates it.” My hands rested inside my sweatshirt pockets, even though this frigid air wasn’t a bother to me. My black boots stomped through the tough rocky path, crunching under my feet as I spoke. “I sometimes wish that- I could do my deeds and not feel a thing. Part of me is still there, still human. Though it is being swallowed whole by the darkness that lingers in my father’s shadow.”

“How many people have you…” She trailed off into a stiff breath.

“37.” I was short and stern with my answer. “Everytime I make a kill, I put a tally on my knife.” Lifting up my jacket, I showed her the dagger that was securely locked into my belt loop.

“Oh my God. I never thought…” She decided not to finish her sentence. “Well if you don’t mind me asking- What is your father like? Power crazed psychopath that just won’t die?

“Ha, have you met him? You hit the bullseye.” I giggled a little, baring my yellowing teeth. “He is not a man you want to know.”

“What about your mom? What is she-” I came to hard end and froze in place.

“She’s dead.” I snapped. Anahera gave me a surprised look, and tilted her head down.

“I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.” She was sympathetic, carefully speaking her words in an easy tone.

“I was abandoned as a baby. My father once told me she wanted me dead, called me a mistake. She killed herself. As for him? He couldn’t care for a baby at the time. He left me at the orphanage up until I was ready to take my place.” I sat down on a decaying log, Ana took a seat next to me and sighed in discontent.

“My mom was killed in a raid when I was 5. I remember her, she was very kind and reassuring. Sometimes I see her in my dreams. She cries over me, in fear she would lose me. Its funny, you know. Once I scraped up my knees trying to make a jump over a rock. She was the one who showed me how to help. She taught me how to heal.” Becoming teary-eyed, she rested her head in her knees, sniffling and choking on her words.

“Hey, Its okay…” Those were the only words I could say, for I knew not how to “cheer up” others. She looked at me with her ocean eyes and tried to mouth the words that lied in her mind.

“When the man stormed into the house, He threatened her. She refused to give me up and her ripped out her heart. I hid under a desk in the closet, I could see through the cracks- everything that happened. Thats when I learned what true power I possessed...” She was edgy, trying hard not to cry.

“I-I don’t know how to respond.” I told her the honest to Hell truth. She opened the palm of my hand and traced the lines up to my arm veins. I was hungover by what she said.

“It is okay, not everyone is fit for happy endings…” She looked at my necklace and touched it softly. “Is this the key to Hell?” She was light with her voice, making sure we did not go back down the dark roads of our pasts’.

“Yes.” It pulled me apart. I did not know my destiny, I did not know the truth, I did not know trust. “What the fuck! Why do I have to go through this? Why!” I stood up and raised my hands to the tree tops. I was frustrated and mentally lost. “I guess I was the Devil's son, considering my violent outbursts.

“Elli-Tievel… I am not sure what you prefer, I want to tell you another truth. You're in his line. You have his eternal blood. You need to know, I can help. I can show you the light. It’s in your eyes- you’re still unbroken.” She opened her book and flipped throughout the full pages. “I remember my mother… She wrote something down about- God where is it!” I watched her violently surf through the journal.

“It is okay, really. I don’t need help.” I was just lying not only to her, but to myself as well.

“I found it! My mother wrote down an entry about Half-Breeds.” She pointed to the book.

“What? A half-breed?” Offended by this term, I gave her an annoyed look. “I am not-”

“Half demon? Yeah, you’re a half-breed.” I was cut off by her snarky tone.

“Oh. Well I guess I am a halfa then.” I tilted my head back, laughing in amusement. The mood was suddenly lighter again.

“Umm… That is nothing to be proud of. Look again.” Shoving the aged smelly paper in my face, I read the sentences that were neatly printed in fine handwriting. The words came out to me.

“Any Half-Breed shall not live, for their life only contributes to the destruction of mankind as well as the downfall of the Mortal world, Heaven, and Underworld. It has been foretold that the son of the Devil will be born on a red moon. Also with the knowledge that the Necropocalypse will begin on that said moon on the sons 18th year of life.”

“I-I don’t… How could I cause all of this?” Shocked by the truth I backed away. The Necropocalypse? What the hell is that? Father never mentioned…

“The Necropocalypse- When all Hell breaks loose, literally. It says that Mortifer will rise up from the depths of the Underworld and overtake the Mortal World.” She was solid with her reply.

“I was never informed of that.” Lost within the chaos I decided to end the conversation. “Well, the sun’s going down, it’d be best if I get going.” I shook her hand and started off.

“Wait, do you want to have dinner tonight? You can meet my family.” Ana smiled a tinge.

“Maybe another time.” I justifiably shook my head and began walking, leave her in my tracks.
